The Star One Ep

Since forming at the beginning of the year, Star One, two brothers from Kent, have emerged from obscurity to quickly create a name for themselves in the production world. Having racked up hundreds of thousands of YouTube hits with their remixes of the Rastamouse theme tune and Jamie Woon’s ‘Lady Luck’, their skill has not gone unnoticed. The pair now has official remixes for Island Records, Ministry of Sound, and Polydor Records under their belt. Tipped to follow in the successful footsteps of fellow production duos Nero and Chase and Status, the Star One pair are set to release their first offering ‘The Star-One EP’ on the 26^th September through Carrot Records. The EP was part recorded in the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy studios in London.

The EP features production collaborations with UK heavyweight Toddla T, a guest verse from Manchester rapper Faro and the delicate tones of up and coming vocalist Sarah Lillie. The EPcelebrates diverse elements of the UK Underground scene by fusing Garage, Grime, House and Hip Hop influences with their trademark use of chopped samples and subtle basslines. ‘Bagz’ - a silky, catchy up front vocal garage number – is the lead single of the EP. ‘Slow Down’, ‘Visions’ and the Toddla T co-produced UK Funky stomper ‘Power Riddim’ have proved very popular with Club DJ’s.

The above film has become something of a phenomenon, after making it onto the BBC London News a couple of months ago the animated short seems to be being wheeled out at every single hipster free plonk shindig this side of vintageville. For those that don’t know, my brother Kibwe made the film and as such I continue to be teeth clenchingly proud of him. No people, I won’t shut up my brother is a genius my other brother is a genius so, by proxy so am I, deal with it and jog on. The pre-riot timing of his movie (and the paperweight video which I co-conceptualized and directed) proved to be a double-edged sword for both of us. Being the boys who appeared to pre-empt mass civil unrest didn’t merely produce that smug and beardy ‘I told you so‘ warmness it should have, nor did the clairvoyance frighten us. It opened a creative can of worms as image makers and as South London bred black males. The screening of Robots Of Brixton was held in Granville Arcade - now called Brixton Village – maybe two weeks before Tottenham went up in gunsmoke and angry flames. Wandering around Brixton on the day of the screening everyone seemed to have seen the news report on the film in which which Kibwe sort of hinted that the conditions for a riot still existed, he was being filmed stood outside the monolithic barrier block at the time. As far as I could ascertain local people wanted see the animation and a good crowd was expected for the screening later.

When I arrived that evening I found a crowd of maybe 300 design high brows crammed into the avenues in the arcade. There were an awful lot of fit girls there too. Bonus. They were fit in that new Brickie urban boho kind of way all hippy hair matched with tight leggings and that. Anyhow I digress. I located my sibling and he triumphantly told me that that morning Lambeth Council had tried their hardest to pull the plug on the screening but through gritty negotiation and a bit of luck they had managed to circumvent red tape and get the film on. The event proved to be a roaring success but I was left wondering why Lambeth Council had a problem with a young Brixtonite screening film about Brixton that had brought international attention. Surely it was within their remit to support local art not to stifle it? They were on our side, right? I put these questions to the back of my mind and continued getting pissed on free beer and talking shit about fixed gear tricycles or rare trainers or something.

The day after the riots began my brothers phone rang it was the BBC again. He didn’t take the call and didn’t call them back. I got some weird messages about the paperweight video and decided to skip out the “Fuck You David Cameron’ call and response section at the Proud Gallery show that Murkage had that evening. Kibwe and I both felt that our respective works could be misunderstood as a blunt justification for the violence and obscure the cautionary political message that’s weaved within them and the artworks themselves. I went on to write a few bits here and there, which sum up my position on the riot and its aftermath.

Returning to Brixton Village the other day took me back to the screening and the politic surrounding it. Brixton Village was described this weekend in the Observer magazine as the most exciting culinary happening in London right now. The tatty bric- a- brack shops and empty units that once filled the arcade have been replaced by smart little restaurants selling delicious food for under a tenner, noice mini boutiques and quirky drinking hangouts. The arcade still retains many of the older ethnic business as well giving the whole place a kind of unique and wholly real character. Outside in the market itself the fashion brigade jostle with fierce African ladies for prime cuts of meat or the best fruit and veg without the cynicism that can be found in other emerging parts of London. Brixton itself has changed. I remember back in the day coming off the tube to be confronted by a barrage of Albanian travel card sellers and one eyed crack dealers, although the rastafarian mentalist who used to ride around beating white people with a carved walking stick is still there, he no longer has a bmx, a stick or such a bad attitude. His comb harmonica playing friend of questionable gender seems to have disappeared too. I remember MC neutrino shooting himself in the leg getting into his porche parked outside the rec and no-one batting an eyelid now suits stand in that spot elbow to elbow with road yutes waiting in line for curry goat from Bushmans kitchen. I remember the 90's when Wayne Douglas got killed by police and the newly gentrified Brixton got smashed to bits for the third time. Now it all feels different. While many economic problems still persist, Brixton did not go up in flames during the recent riots as so many predicted. The Robots seem somehow to believe in a future for them and their area, together. Lambeth has invested heavily and carefully to get Brixton to this point, looking at it now its no surprise they were so protective of its image and reputation. Brixton Village represents people power at its best. After the market owners' (a publicly traded property group) plans to turn the market into apartments and a car park were thankfully overturned by local residents and traders, the council intervened and introduced the decidedly un-corporate Space Makers Agency who created the model that has allowed local young entrepreneurs to set up exciting small business, using the landlords money. This has helped to truly transform the area in a way the Tory City Challenge program failed almost 20 years ago.

Surely there’s a lesson here for my other home, Manchester’s Northern Quarter. With un-restricted private property speculation leading to massively overpriced commercial rent and thus faltering business, the Northern Quarter seems to be in a permanent state of flux. During the riots a beeline was made for Oldham Street and businesses were attacked by people who really felt like they had no attachment to the area. Perhaps for many the Northern Quarter has become a closed shop, a preserve of trendy’s and big business masquerading as independent enterprise. Perhaps it was merely (and in my view unfairly) seen as no different from the Arndale as a faceless repository of high value goods ripe for looting. Whatever. If Manchester wants to keep hold of creative talent in the face of tomorrows economic reality, entrepreneurial opportunity and support at the local authority level and actual innovative local governance has to be in place. Without it areas like the Northern Quarter will return to the waste or worse become an uninhabited and perennially targeted pit of unsustainable faux yuppiedom.
